Carly is currently an honors student at Columbia College of Chicago studying the major of music business and the minor of photography. Carly has worked on and indulged in several artistic disciplines including photography, painting, writing and her favorite, music. Her love for music stems back to early childhood, since she has learned to play several instruments including piano, guitar, and ukelele. Carly considers her greatest achievement before her current education was the work she did when living in Florida. There, she was assigned to teach music at middle schools who did not have the means or funds to have an arts curriculum. The children she taught inspired her so deeply, that she decided to come to Chicago to further her education, which is a luxury so many do not have.
Carly is the youngest of three children in a very loving family who raised her to give back. From a young age Carly would accompany her mother on several volunteer works, the most memorable being at The Mother Teresa's Shelter for Women. Inspired by her mother, at 17, Carly was honored with the responsibility of head officer of youth volunteers at the Jersey Battered Women's Service Inc, where she organized the volunteer programs that youths under the age of 14 could participate in.
Although she was the youngest in her home, she was dead center in age of her 46 first cousins, and was very frequently taking care of the younger family members . As an ambitious child, Carly received her American Red Cross First AID/CPR/AED Certification and completed the American Red Cross Babysitting Course at age the age of 11. After her certification, Carly babysat for several families around her town. She worked with children of vastly different ages but regularly worked for a family for several years with two children. Of the two children, the 7 year old suffered from extreme asthma, and the 12 year old from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional defiant disorder. During the same years, Carly also regularly worked with a family whose son suffered from autism and a congenital heart defect. She would visit him (with the presence of a parent or nurse) for two hours twice a week to play music, make artwork and poetry, and play games.
At 15 Carly became a counselor in training at the overnight summer YMCA Camp Chingachook. Every summer from the age of 16 to 18, Carly became a full time camp counselor where for two week increments she would be responsible for a cabin of up to twelve girls ages 9-12. During the days at Chingachgook she would teach boys and girl of all ages photography and art. Every two weeks she would have to lead a troop of up to 8 girls on a three day hike in the Adirondacks which is why she acquired her; lifeguard certification, wilderness first aid (WFA), and her CPR/first aid certification.
After her high school graduation Carly moved to Florida to take care of her sister who needed support for her severe Epilepsy. It was there in Florida where Carly was introduced to the company, Super Science and Amazing Art. Even though, just 19 years old at the time, she was hired to teach art and music at schools where many of the children were considered at risk. The experience was so wonderful and the children were such amazing inspirations that she moved to Chicago to continue to study!
Fun facts about Carly: Carly has always loved Chicago, and would often visit family here as a child. Originally from New York City and New Jersey, Carly loves the little differences this city brings! She loves being outside as much as possible, trying new things, and creating lots of art (especially using her favorite color, red). Carly loves art and music, so she likes to come prepared with some crafts and some instruments!
Carly's favorite part about children is the balanced trade off of inspiration they share. Carly is very imaginative, and believes every child has a light in them that they are willing to shine on the world!
I have been taking care of children from infants to early teenagers most of my life. I was also a camp counselor as well as a music and arts teacher who was recruited to schools to educate children who ranged from kindergarten to freshman in high sch
