My name is Amber, and I grew up in Richmond, VA though I have lived all over the place over the last 18 years including upstate New York, North Carolina, Minnesota, and Mexico. I graduated from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA in 2003 with a B.A. in English Literature, and then I worked for an OB/GYN for one year and as a technical editor for two years before moving to Mexico as a Christian missionary in 2006. I was in Mexico until January 2010 when I returned to the US.
I am STILL a missionary with Alternative Missions, Inc. in Mexico, however I am stateside now coordinating all their church mission teams that go to our location in Cofradia, Nayarit, Mexico. I also provide admin support on an as-needed basis. This is all light, part-time work that I do on the side.
For full-time work, I have spent the last two years caring for triplets. I began caring for them when they were released from the hospital at 10 weeks old, and I have cared for them alone 11 hours/day, 4 days/week ever since. They are now 26 months old, and they have been a joy to love on and care for. Being a part of their growth and development has been one of the most overwhelming blessings of my life.
Working and living in Mexico means that I am fluent in Spanish. I studied for five years in middle/high school and then lived in Spanish for four years. I continue to use my Spanish in my mentor relationships with gals back in Mexico (over phone and email/chat), so it is not becoming rusty in any way.
I started learning to care for children (infants and todlers) when I was six while my mom did childcare in our home full time. Then when I was legally allowed, I began babysitting at the age of 12. I watched kids from toddlers up to school-aged children all through middle and high school. Once I went to college, I was able to branch out and gain more experiences with pre-teens as well as small infants (6-8 weeks and up). This came through part-time nanny/mother's helper work both in Richmond and the Frederiscksburg area as well as work with the play center at a local country club.
Now, I am 32 years old and still continue to help in the child-care realm for friends and family. I am often found sitting for my 2 nephews (8 & 6) and 2 nieces (5 & 3) as well as for the children of some of my dearest friends which are of both genders and a wide variety of ages. In addition, I have some light experience caring for my friend's son who has Aspergers/SID/Autism. It has been challenging, but very rewarding to care for him and learn more about him and his needs and how best to care for him. I have also worked extensively in church programs with children ranging from infants to school-age both on Sunday mornings as well as in mid-week instructional programs. In Mexico I worked most intensely with youth and college-aged "kids". And finally, I also volunteered in preschool summer camp through the YMCA when I was in high school. So, my experience is quite extensive and varried as far as age ranges, culture, needs, and socio-economic backgrounds.
As implied from my work, I am an evangelical, non-denominational, Protestant Christian, but I will most certainly respect your wishes regarding how outspoken I am with my faith in your family setting and in my interactions with your children.
