I suppose I should tell you a bit about myself! My name is Colleen and I'm a 21 year old student from Warwick, Rhode Island. After graduating high school in 2010, I decided to pursue two of my passions, medicine and missionary work. I took a job as a Certified Nursing Assistant on one of Rhode Island Hospital's Medical/Surgical units and started saving money for my first mission trip to East Africa!
Fall of 2010 found me in Kijabe, Kenya with ten other college-aged individuals. We spent three months there working in schools, orphanages, refugee camps and hospitals. I can say with all certainty that those three months were some of the most influential of my life. The people and places of Africa stole my heart in a way I, to this day, can't even describe.
Back home for the winter, I returned to Rhode Island Hospital as a CNA on their Trauma unit. Work there was exciting to say the least! I discovered my love for Emergency Medicine and began searching for more opportunities to learn and grow in that medical specialty. And that's when Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. stepped into my life! I was offered a position there on a Pediatric Transplant Unit and scooped it up in a heartbeat.
So here I was 19 years old and I'm moving my entire life and well-being to one of the most important cities in the country. On my own. What an adventure! So for six months, I lived the big city life and worked with GUH.
Fast forward four months to January 2012, and I found myself living in Iringa, Tanzania. Weird, right? Let me explain. A few months after moving to D.C. I was handed yet another chance to travel to East Africa for mission work; Three countries, four months...I couldn't say "no". I left my flashy new life (although, I thoroughly enjoyed it!!) and traded it for a tent and a 65 liter backpack.
With my second African adventure complete in May 2012, back to Rhode Island I went. Wanting to have a more flexible work schedule than what my usual overwhelming hospital hours provided, I decided to try my hand at the whole nanny thing. Best idea I ever had. By the end of the summer I was caring for over 20 children on a rotating basis. From a set of 6 month old twins to twelve year old soccer players, I was certainly busy. So much so that I happily continued working into the fall semester.
All of this brings us to today, I'm currently enrolled as a Biology/Premed major at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. I will be returning home to Rhode Island early May 2013 and will be looking for a few more clients to add to the mix.
Please feel free email me any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
