Summer Safety for Sitters: Outings

For the final post in our summer safety for sitters series, we’ve got some summertime tips for taking the children on outings.
Warmer weather makes all of us want to get outside a little more, but before going on an outing, make sure you’ve got permission from the parents. (We know most of you already know that, but we still just have to say it!)
Once you’ve got permission, make sure you know where you’re going and print out maps with clear directions just to be safe.
Here are some additional tips once you actually get outdoors with the kids.
Making Sure Children Don’t Get Lost
- Go over the outing rules, such as not talking to strangers, not running off and being well-behaved
- Stay close to the children and don’t let them out of your sight.
- Write down your cell phone number for each child to keep in their pocket.
- Designate a meeting place in case anyone gets separated.
- Assign each child a “buddy” to help keep everyone together.
- Tell the children that if they do get lost, they should ask a mommy for help if they can’t find an official authority.
If a child does get lost, immediately find an official authority — they’ll have specific procedures to find lost children. If you think the child is in danger, call 911.

something i tell the kids i work with if they do get lost to find an adult who works there or with a family, but also not to leave the zoo/museum/wherever we are with that person no matter who they are. since there could be adults who seem to be with a group or look like they work there may not be either of those things and could be someone dangerous.
