Travel Tips for Memorial Day Weekend

by Admin on May 26th, 2010

It’s almost Memorial Day weekend, and you know what that means — fun, family travel to exciting destinations. So whether you’re flying to the nearest beach or taking a weekend car trip to grandma’s, check out these tips before you hit the road.

Flying:
Your trip will possibly involve airports… with delayed flights. And long layovers. And cranky kids. Yikes. But Cheapflights.com created a useful airport-by-airport kids diversion guide to help parents find ways to keep their kids occupied.

The Kids Airport Diversion Guide features 22 major airports across the country and lets you in on the fun, kid-friendly activities, exhibits and play areas in each. For example, Chicago’s own O’hare sports a Kids on the Fly interactive exhibit from the Chicago Children’s Museum, complete with a fantasy helicopter, cargo plane, air control tower and luggage station.

Driving:
Before heading on your next road trip, be sure to pack your Road Trip Survial Kit, and check out our How to Keep Kids Calm in the Car post on how to diffuse common car-related situations.

Your kit should include:

  • Individually wrapped snacks
  • Bottles of water
  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • Ginger ale (for motion sickness)
  • Barf bags (in case the ginger ale doesn’t work)
  • Tech toys like audio books or a portable DVD player
  • Portable potty and toilet paper (Trust us, you’d rather have this stuff than be in an unfortunate situation where you WISH you had it.)
  • Easily accessible change of clothes
  • Band-aids and Neosporin
  • Plastic bags
  • Flashlight or book light
  • A surprise toy, book, treat or game

What are some of your traveling tips?
