Want to Wear Your Dead Pet?
Before we get into this news story, we should warn you that it might be a little disturbing. As if you could assume that from the title… Anyway, it looks as if one crazy couple in the UK couldn’t stand to part with their pets who have passed on, so they decided to create “jumpers” knitted out of the hair moulted by the pedigree pets and spun into yarn.
People, we could not make this stuff up.

The first sweater, the white one worn by Beth Willis above, comes from her dog Kara, a white Samoyed (a Russian breed) — and it was actually created while Kara was still alive, back in 1990. So, that’s not AS creepy… right?
Says Beth Willis, “”It would just fall off the dogs and I would run a wet hand over the carpet and pick it up. We found out from the breeders we got the pups from that it was possible to use their coat for clothes. Apparently it is quite popular with lots of the people who breed long-haired dogs.”
Apparently.
By the time the couple’s next dog, a Swedish Lapphund called Penny, died six years ago, Beth was already working on a new garment, which you see on her husband, Brian, in the above photo.

The couple sent the dog hair to a woman who has been spinning dog wool since 1977. She explained, “It takes about 30 oz. to make a jumper, but you would need 40 oz. at the start as you lose some in the spinning. Brian and Beth have had more than 5 lbs. spun, wrapped, pre-shrunk and ready to be knitted.”
And there’s your weird pet news of the day.
