PetSmart Bans Bully Breeds

PetSmart’s PetsHotel and Doggy Day Camp both come with one very controversial disclaimer: They will no longer accept Pit Bulls into its programs. This includes “American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds.”

Many people are outraged. We especially like one poster’s comment…

“If you raise a poodle the way some people raise pits, you will have an attack powder puff. If you raise a pit with love and attention, you will have a friend who will love you for life.”

If you’re outraged too, here’s how you can contact PetSmart.

  • E-mail: CustomerCare@petsmart.com
  • Phone: 1.888.839.9638

We understand that PetSmart has a whole mess of liability to battle with and that it’s safer for them to cover themselves in this situation. But we’re disappointed that this action feeds into the hysteria and stereotypes about this breed — the “Pit Bull paranoia” as it’s been called.

Side note… check out what type of dog PetSmart used in a 2007 sales flyer, bottom left.

Pitbulls and other breeders are lovers….not fighters!!! Its all how people treat and raise them.

I am so tired of people banning such wonderful animals. Bully breeds are just like any other breed. With socialization and training any breed will be a great member of a family. When I worked in an animal shelter the meanest dogs where always the small breeds, but people would actually laugh and try to play with this dog that is bearing teeth and growling. These same people would walk by a cage with a bully breed just sitting in it wagging his/her tail and say “these dogs are mean, you should really just put it down.”

If they’re going to ban pit bulls, they should also ban any other breed of dog that can be mean-but that would take away all of their business. Any dog can be nice or mean, and although some are known for a bad temperament, they should judge each individual dog, not the breed.

I have a pit bull and he is the absolute sweetest dog I have ever owned. There is not one bad bone in his body. I have an infant that is crawling around and loves playing with his tail and hugging his face and all my pitty does is lick him to death. I’m sick of people painting such a negative picture of pit bulls. They are truly lovers!!!!
