National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

The first week of November is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Since you love caring for animals, why not take a moment to show your local animal shelter how much you appreciate all they do as well.

A few ways to help and spread the word:

  • Donate a portion of your pet care sales this week (or month!) to your local shelter.
  • Donate needed items such as pet beds, kitty litter, collars, leashes, clean towels, dog and cat food (check with the shelter to see if they buy a particular brand), stainless steel bowls, pet carriers/crates, etc.
  • Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Add a tagline to your email signature reminding everyone of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
  • Volunteer at your local shelter, even if you can only spare a few hours a month.
  • Send a card, note or email to your local shelter thanking them for all they do.
  • Support legislation to protect animals by contacting government officials (click here to learn more).
  • Take a tour of your local shelter if you’ve never visited before, just so you can better understand how they work.
  • Sign up for a Pet First Aid course so you’re prepared to help pets in case of an emergency, helping shoulder some of the pressure faced by shelters.
  • Be a responsible pet owner and make sure your own pets are spayed and neutered (affordable options here), and wear proper ID tags at all times.
  • Link to this blog from your own blog to help educate and inform others about National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week!

We are fortunate to have an excellent animal shelter in Boise. The Idaho Humane Society does a great job of caring for the animals and making every effort to place ALL adoptable animals. Volunteers like Cathleen Catti spend their days making sure dogs get into foster homes or adopted when they’ve been there too long. As a pet sitter in Boise, I offer a discount to my clients who adopt cats and dogs from I.H.S. or other local rescue groups. I want to thank the wonderful staff and volunteers at I.H.S. for their dedication and great work! I appreciate you all!! - Julie Fredrick - The Pet Sitter LLC, Boise, ID

I have visited the animal shelter in Newark Ohio today. They do a good job caring for the animals and keeping everything clean. I plan to help care for these animals this year.

I worked at animal shelters in New England for years and they’re very rewarding places not only to work, but to volunteer, visit, or adopt a pet.
