I have been working with children most of my life, and love what I do! From babysitting and nannying to working in daycare, special education, volunteering (big brothers/big sisters, special olympics, church, etc..) and tutoring - It has all been a wonderful & enriching experience. While working at a nationally accredited daycare center on my university campus, I was introduced to a new level of understanding, when it comes to caring for children. l attended training sessions, workshops & seminars, and took child development and family studies courses in order to maintain our high level of care. Now, years later, being exposed to all parenting styles, philosophies, and procedures, I am comfortable with any family dynamic. Whatever works best for your family, is what I will mirror and follow!
I am more of an "in-arms" caretaker/babysitter by nature, always nearby, keeping close watch, playing, interacting, and looking for educational or teaching moments. I do not promote television, and would rather engage children in activity during our time together. I try to be the babysitter that I want someday for my future children - and I would not want to pay someone to sit around while on their phone or computer, eating cheetos and letting the baby bottles pile up :) I think this job is a big deal with considerable responsibility, requiring compassion, energy, and lots of focus!
Over the past few years, caring for newborns and infants, has become more of my specialty - although I have a plethora of experience caring for children from 1 month to 14 years of age (at this point the caregiver role turns mostly to "chaeffuer" though!). I have experience caring for twins (which I absolutely LOVE!), and for larger families in general. In addition, I contine to educate myself on child development & caregiving - reading everything from attachment parenting and The Ferber Method, to sleep training, diet, vaccines, cognitive & emotional development.
I completed a very intense sign language interpreting program last spring, and have been studing ASL for the past four years. I love the language, hope to work with Deaf children or in the Deaf community someday - And perhaps teach baby sign language on the side! It's an added skill I can bring, if you are a family interested in using it with your children. In addition, I am a DONA certified Postpartum Doula (A HUGE passion of mine), and just completed birth doula training as well.
I am also infant & child CPR certified, received my pertussis shot (last year), have reliable transportation, a clean record and great references :)
