I have been working in the childcare industry for over fourteen years.  I have worked in various child care settings, from franchise daycares, individual daycares, and in-home childcare.

My experience began at Youthland Academy in Cincinnati in 1999.  I worked in the infant room, and was responsible for opening the daycare center.  We had a teacher/child ratio of 5:1 or 12:2, so I am comfortable taking care of multiple children at once.  I was also working part time for an independently owned daycare during the evening hours for additional income.  I continued my service with Youthland even after my husband and I moved to a suburb of Cincinnati.  I continued to work with the infant room, but I was now responsible for closing the center.  I continued working at Youthland until my husband and I moved to Cleveland.

Upon arriving in Cleveland in 2006, I decided that I was going to continue working in childcare, so I obtained an infant room position at Creative Playrooms, in Strongsville.  Working at Creative Playrooms was a very different experience than I had been used to, due to the amount of children that we took care of.  We had approximately 30 infants and 5 teachers in the infant room, previously the most infants that I was involved with was 18, with 3 teachers.  The work atmosphere was still good there with all of the infants that we had, this is where I mastered multi-tasking.  When enrollment was low or as needed, I would help out in other age group rooms, up to 12 years old.  I even worked in the kitchen on several occasions.  I was lucky to be able to care for our daughter while I was still working in the infant room.

Shortly after our daughter turned two, in 2010, I began my current, in-home childcare position.  I just ended my contract with a family, watching a 1 year old girl, 4 year old boy, 6 year old Golden Lab, and 3 cats, along with my daughter, at their home.  I enjoyed the personal attention that I gave to each of the children on a daily basis.  I was able to do homework with the two toddlers, as I prepare them both for preschool.  The both learned their letters, colors, shapes, and numbers.  Both of them can successfully write their names.  They are getting some social skills, in that they are interacting and playing with each other on a daily basis, to a point when on Fridays they are upset that they are going to spend a few days away from each other.

I enjoy spending time with my family, going to the zoo, and swimming (when it is warm enough).  I have been married to my husband and best friend for nearly 10 years.  We have a three year old daughter that currently is involved in dance and plans to “Dance like the big girls” soon.  I have a ten year old Chihuahua that is very laid back and just likes to hang out around our house.  We have a large family room that is currently used as a playroom, along with an extra bedroom that my daughter has turned in to an additional play room.  We have a swing set and pool (fenced and retractable ladder).

Danielle watched my kids for just over 6 months at my house, daily. She was prompt, and for the most part took good care of my kids. I have a 18 month old, 3 year old, and 8 year old. She did best with the younger two, and had a hard time being a figure of authority rather than a friend to the children, which caused some friction between my eldest and her (what 8 year old doesn’t see how much they can get away with?). Unfortunately, due to the circumstances she decided to terminate her employment, I would not recommend her. She called one day with her two weeks’ notice, then later that week said she didn't want to leave, but has been unhappy for months - but never mentioned a word to me of her feelings. She stated the reason she was quitting was because of my eldest daughter; and how she doesn't listen well, follow directions, etc.. I pointed out that she needs to show that she has authority in the house and ground/take things away, etc. Not just send her to her room for a bit. Well, unfortunately, she decided to have this conversation while all the kids were around and my eldest heard her and cried the whole night blaming herself for Danielle quitting. She apologized to Danielle and said she would start to do better. Danielle did not even finish her two weeks; she e-mailed me Sunday afternoon that she would not be returning for her last week of employment (putting me in a difficult situation). From that point forward she would not communicate with me directly, and I had to get my kids personal information, keys to my house, and car seats by communicating through her husband only. I had told her if she had been unhappy and there had been issues for that long, then something should have been mentioned to me a long time so I nip whatever issues were arising in the bud. Therefore, showing me that her communication skills aren't the best. She seems to do well with younger children, though I would suggest your discipline techniques prior to hiring ( I do time out's, taking away toys, or TV time, etc) - Kathy S.

Danielle says: Responding to the above Review from Kathy S. I am sorry that the Nannying position did not work out. Yes, I did terminate my employment a week early, which I thought was the best for myself and my daughter, at the time. I had watched the children for nearly 6 months, as she stated. I would take the oldest to choir practices two days a week at her school. I would take the two younger ones, along with my daughter to the library, park, and zoo during my time there. While I was there, I would also regularly do all household chores consisting of, washing clothes, doing dishes, cleaning the house, etc. I have learned a lot from this position and situation and will use it on my next child care position. As far as the discipline I believe in quiet time, to let the child think about what they did. Afterwards I will talk to the child to discuss what they did that resulted in them being in quiet time. After quiet time, we also will discuss what they need to do better to not be put in quiet time for the same thing. I do not yell at children and that seemed to be the method that was recommended on the oldest child, by the mother, and I was not comfortable with that. As far as communication skills, I would leave daily reports of everything that went on during the day with the children. If the children were sick or I felt the mother needed to be notified, I would contact her. The communication for the children was always present. I also discussed some of the problems that was occurring with the oldest child, but after several times of it being discussed, I felt that there were no changes. I am not going to use this forum to get in to details, but I believe that the best thing for myself & daughter and her family was to go our separate ways. I have been doing child care for nearly 15 years and this would be my first negative review of any kind. I have many references available and I would hope that you would not let one person's side of the story affect the chance of allowing me take care for your children. Thank you, Danielle
