My parents' first "child" was a schipperke/dachsund mix. When we moved to an apartment with a no fur policy, he was retired to my grandparents' acreage, with an assortment of farm cats and other adopted strays.
Because I missed having a pet, my extended family coordinated my Christmas gifts to provide me with a complete setup for goldfish during my first grade year. I started with 2 goldfish, one of whom lived about 5 years, and continued to own fish and other freshwater creatures through college, despite the acquisition of a family dog in 3rd grade after moving.
Throughout my middle and high school years, my brother was always bringing home new pets without thinking the entire process through, so I assisted with or assumed care of snakes, frogs, crayfish, baby pigeons, and gerbils.
As my husband had also grown up with pets, we adopted our first cat--an elderly, obese, and territorial housecat a friend could not keep, within 2 months of getting our first apartment. Shortly after his death, we purchased our own home, and immediately adopted a cat and dog from the humane society, on the assumptions that a) the house was sized for 2 of each and b) strays would find us. Both of these have been borne out.
