We have had at least one dog in my family for more than ten years. Even at the start I was in charge of walking, feeding, grooming, bathing them and sometimes cleaning out their ears (they had infections sometimes). I learned how to teach our first dog to heel, sit, lay down, stay, etc. with the help of my step-dad who has owned a Paws-for-a-Cause dog. I have also house-sat a couple times for a family on vacation who had two cats. We have had many indoor and outdoor cats and my main chores included feeding them and changing their litter. I so enjoy our animals (we also have a turtle and have had frogs and many fish) and have learned a lot about them over the years.
