Many years ago I taught a few children to play beginning piano. I would like to do it again for a couple of students. The optimal age to begin, I believe, is about 6-7 years old depending upon the temperament and motivation of the child. Lessons would be 1/2 hour at most (perhaps starting with 20 mins. until more seasoned), and the focus would be upon proper hand and finger placement, simple scales, very simple music theory, and exposure to the classics: Chopin, Schubert, Lizst, Schumann, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, Bartok, etc. as well as the traditional American songs of Stephen Foster and folk/traditional and contemporary childrens' tunes.

I studied classical piano from age 8-14. I had music theory homework, hand exercises, exposure to the great composers, did recitals: solo, duet and trio. I have a portable Casio keyboard.
