My strongest subjects are reading, writing and foreign languages, specifically French and Italian (I'm fluent in both), though I also took three years of Latin in high school. I can tutor biology and marine biology very well, as I currently have a minor in the latter subject. I also have a very strong grasp of American history.
As a Training & Development Manager at the UCSD Guardian, my job is to educate collegiate writers on journalistic writing styles, coaching them to present information in a clearer and more concise format. I also encourage them to consider all sides of an issue, and ask themselves questions about the phrases they're using and any loose ends that might need tying up.
When I was volunteering at the Communita delle Piagge in Florence, Italy, I taught Italian children French and English, working around a two-way language barrier and using tools like pop music to make learning English more appealing. I also was a kayak instructor and used games to help children age 7-17 improve their technique, tailoring them to individual ability and aptitude. I have been called in as an emergency French tutor.
My teaching style involves helping the child realize the connections and answers for themselves, instead of telling them the correct response. I encourage things like mnemonic devices and making flashcards when it comes to things that require memorization, but my goal as a language tutor is to make the child feel more comfortable in conversation.
My current GPA at UCSD is a 3.6. I am a member of the National Honors Society and honor roll, and a recipient of Provost's Honors at UCSD. I received a 2230 on the SAT (790 Verbal, 730 Writing, 710 Math). I recieved a 5 on the History, Economics (Micro), English, Biology, and Government AP Tests.
