I have been a peer tutor in the Skidmore College Writing Center for the past academic year. Training and application for the job required a three-credit honors course, for which I was nominated by a professor and received an A grade.

The aim has always been to help students find tools to become better writers, not to edit papers independently. My specific tutoring philosophy therefore emphasizes collaborative work at each of the various stages of the writing process. For example, to avoid fundamental structural weaknesses in a paper’s organization, I put particular emphasis on the planning and pre-writing phases, wherein I may ask the tutee a series of questions to challenge his or her argument. At other times, I may simply serve as a sounding board. I am also prepared to give mini grammar lessons for sentence-level help.

Recently, I received Skidmore’s all-college writing prize, the Joseph C. Jr. Palamountain Prose Award. I believe that continued distinction in my own writing only further contributes to my abilities as a tutor.
