In 2009, I was accepted into the New York Teaching Fellows program and began my teaching career as a special education teacher in the Bronx.  I was a 4th grade teacher my first year at PS 138, and a first grade teacher in my second year.  After teaching all day, I then went to Hunter College in the evening to work towards getting my masters.  Now, 6 credits away, I am scheduled to receive my masters in December of this year.  

Hunter offered a rigorous program that taught us the theory of good teaching and the pedagogical skills necessary in order to affect change in the New York Public School system.  During my second year at Hunter College, I tutored a first grade special education student twice a week at Hunter College, which entailed assessing his areas of weakness and planning lessons that to improve upon these areas, while methodically tracking his progress.  

In my own class, I used Fundations to help my struggling readers to improve upon their decoding skills and reading comprehension.  

I recently passed the CST and the ATS- the tests required to receive certification as a special education teacher in New York State.  Once I have completed my masters, I will receive an initial license for grades 1-6 and 5-9.
