For the past 6 years, I have worked as a part-time babysitter for families in the NYC area, offering general care as well as homework help. As these children got older and required less supervision, several of these parents retained me instead as a tutor for their kids, aged 8-16. During my late high school years, I visited the homes of these students on a biweekly basis, offering instruction and assistance in Math, Science, Social Studies, Religion, Reading, and Writing.
Since moving to DC and as a student at Georgetown University, I have taken several upper-level courses in education, each of which has included a biweekly immersion (either as a private tutor to a struggling student or as a teacher's aide in a larger classroom setting). After graduation, I hope to work for 2 years as a volunteer for Teach for America.
I also have experience in working in NYC private high schools (of which I am a product) offering SAT practice and preparation. I received a score of 2330 out of 2400 my first time taking the exam and believe that I am well-suited to offer advice to young college-bound students. I teach a number of skills and strategies for successful standardized test-taking.
While I am both ambitious and hardworking, I am also very laid back and have a great sense of humor which makes me well-suited to working with teenagers. Because I am 21 years old, I occupy a comfortable middle ground between "friend" and "teacher" and I find this closeness to their reality make it very easy to connect with the students I tutor.
