As the eldest of four children, I have always been the go-to-guy for homework-help, and I've been honing my skills as a tutor since I was in grade school.
Probably because I got my start working with my own siblings, I’ve always found it easy to empathize with my tutees when they are feeling distracted or distressed and to help them power through their academic insecurities without getting frustrated or flustered myself, even when they do. Teaching one on one or in a very small group is my format of choice because it allows me to tailor my approach to whomever I’m working with, and to give them my undivided attention and plenty of patience, which is sometimes just what they’ve been missing in class. I love the feeling of triumph that comes with helping someone learn something new, or master that tough concept they've been struggling with; if I can turn academic despair into enthusiasm, I’ve done my job.
While the fulcrum of my approach is academic help with homework, I strive also to help develop good study and time management habits while helping students get (and stay) organized. Busy parents are not always able to monitor their children’s workload and progress as carefully as they would like to, especially in high school when the onus is on the student to keep track of what is due. Also parents are not involved as directly by the teachers. Regular meetings with a tutor can help keep teens focused and on track, and keep them from falling behind.
Math (up to and including calculus) and the sciences are my area of expertise. I have also worked with students to prepare for the “Science High School Exam” (Bronx High School of Science is my alma mater) and the (P)SATS and Regents exams. As part of my approach, I print practice tests and run drills until I am satisfied with my tutees comprehension of the material and with their speed and confidence. I've worked extensively with both junior high school and high school aged boys, and helped turn failing grades into honor-roll report cards. I find my work extremely rewarding and I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be interested in an interview.
