As the daughter of one of Pasadena’s most respected childcare providers, I grew up helping out at preschools with 1 and 2 year olds. (My mother established a child development center in Honolulu, HI in 1978 and retired after 13 years as the 6-18 month old lead teacher at Cal-Tech Preschool in 2003. Besides caring for children, she served as a PCC student mentor and provided parenting classes for Cal-Tech Preschool parents.) My first paid child care job was at age 13 for a 6 week old. Through high school, I was a regular care provider for 3 families with children ages 6 months to 12 years. In addition, I had numerous “substitute” care provider jobs. While attending Westmont College, I babysat twin boys from age 18 months for 3 years, from my sophomore year through graduation. During my summers, I worked as an assistant for the 4-5 year old Read more class at Cal-Tech Preschool. I regularly volunteer for childr related activities at my church. Including: nursery care for 0-4 year olds, Sunday school for 5-12 year old classes, and youth activity leader for jr. and sr. high students, including over night events. In 2005 & 2006, I traveled to Bloomington, IN, to stay with a good friend’s children while she and her husband were out of town. On two separate 7-10 day occasions, I care for their two boys and a girl, ages 2, 5 and 7. This included homeschool, household chores, driving them to numerous activities, laundry, grocery shopping and play dates. I worked temporarily as a nanny for a brother and sister, ages 7 and 11. My duties involved helping with homework and driving them to gym and dance classes in the Valley. As a fellow church member, and as a good friend to their parents, the brother and sister, now ages 11 and 15, continue to be important people in my life. Last year, I cared for two boys, ages 3 and 7, while parents were out of town on a business trip. I picked them up from school, helped with homework, made dinner, took care of household chores and played “surrogate” parent at school activities. Grandma picked them up about 8 PM and took them to school in the mornings.
