Starting in 5th grade, I began volunteering at St. Joseph’s Center, a non-profit organization that focuses on reducing poverty and supporting the working poor in Los Angeles. I worked in the pre-school as a teacher’s assistant. I played with the kids, coordinated art activities, prepared snacks, supervised naptime, and provided staff with overall support. I worked from six to seven hours a day during school vacations and summer breaks. My high school required its students to complete at least 60 hours of service, but by 10th grade I completed over 250 hours. As an assistant at St. Joseph's and a mentor for the Boys and Girls Club, I learned how to interact with young children and I recognized the importance of being a role model.
