I have been babysitting either siblings, friends siblings or families in my community since I was 10. As the oldest girl of two younger brothers, leading children younger than me was a natural skill, which over the course of my life has deepened into a deep passion for children's welfare and development. I have worked in the educational side of children development since I was a teen and through my early working life, working as a camp consular, theater teacher and peer mentor for children on the spectrum, or children with learning disabilities. In a more informal setting, I have been the long term babysitter for a couple of families in my neighborhood, including a family whose 5th grader I started babysitting when he was an infant. The bonds we formed across such a long period of time have enriched and expanded my life in so many ways, and I Read more count myself lucky to have been present at so many of his and his sisters developmental milestones. Guiding children reminds me of the depth of human expression, the joy of discovery and the variety of ways in which our world is just so beautifully strange. Seeing those realizations at all states of life has taught me so much, and feeds my own appreciation for life. Any time I spend with children I learn more than I teach them, about myself and the world. It is an exhausting, but beautiful way to live.
