For over two years, I had the pleasure of working as a Child Care Attendant at the New York Sports Clubs with children ranging from 4 months to 10 years old. I was in charge of caring for the club members’ children while they utilized the fitness facility. Overall, I enjoyed this experience substantially because I got to establish relationships with the children as well as the parents. It was difficult at times when a child was brought in for the first time, but with lots of patience and compassion, I worked with the parents to make their children’s experience trusting and enjoyable. It was indeed very satisfying when those kids that initially struggled to see their parents go, were very happy to come and even did not want to leave at the end of the session. As part of my job, I aimed to recognize the children’s different needs and preferences, and always strive to remember them and think of new activities that could inspire their creativity and interest. In some instances, some of the parents asked for my services in their own homes which allowed me to establish an even stronger relationships with them and their children. Aside from the practical experience working with children, I also sought out additional opportunities to learn more about childcare. As a result, I decided to take a Parenting course which gave me valuable insights on how to fulfill children’s needs, resolve conflicts effectively as well as educate them correctly without jeopardizing their integral and natural development. Other courses such as Human Growth and Development, General Psychology, First Aid and Personal Safety taught me about the different stages of human development, how personality traits can be identified as these happen and how to make safety a priority at all times. This proved incredibly helpful to understand where each child is in their development process as well as how to help them interact well with others safely based on their personalities. Caregiving is something I enjoy doing because even though I did not have any siblings growing up, I was one of the older cousins who led play sessions, propose new games and helped resolve conflicts. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what works best for every child and I believe my patience, resilience and loving personality make me a great fit.
