Helloooo prospective families! My name is Meaghan (or Maggie) and I'm looking for a family in need of afternoon care several times per week over the summer. I previously nannied for a family for nine years but recently moved up to Denver to attend school. I consider those kids/parents members of my family and am looking to building a similar relationship with a family closer to where I live. Three of my main tenets of babysitting involve of lots of pretend play, outside activities, and daily reading aloud. Relevant Volunteer Experience: In 2010, I volunteered at Warren Village (a subsidized housing program for struggling single parents). I worked in the evening childcare center where I watched and entertained children age six weeks to twelve years old while their parents attended life skills classes. Working with these low-income families taught me the value of reliable childcare. My experience at Warren Village Read more instilled in me the idea that a great babysitter/nanny can be much more than a person who watches other people’s kids; a great childcare provider can inspire children and lead them by example.   In the summer of 2010, I went on a three-week service trip to Costa Rica through a travel organization called Walking Tree Travel. On that trip, we worked on a service project in a remote village nestled in the Guanacaste mountain range. While in the village, each of us “home-stayed” with a local family. My home stay not only helped me achieve fluency in Spanish, but also taught me about the importance of clear communication within a family. In the first week there was a lot of confusion because of my jumbled Spanish. But, as my stay progressed, interactions with my host family became less of guessing game and more of a dialogue. One of the most important lessons I took away from living with my Costa Rican family is that clear communication can bond people together and create meaningful and lasting relationships. From the summer of 2013 to the winter of 2014 I volunteered for an amazing organization called Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives. This program gave at risk youth a place to do homework and commune after school. I did everything from preparing a healthy snack to math tutoring. These kids and the head of the organization, Rev. Leon Kelly, made a profound impact on me and helped me realize that my life's calling is to work with children. Please contact me with any questions! I look forward to meeting you. :)
