I have babysitting other people's kids since I was 15 years old, and I love every minute of it! I have worked in several daycare centers and camps over the years. I have worked in church daycare rooms, summer camps, vacation bible school, and coached cheer leading for about 3 years for kindergarten through second graders. I have a brother who is 9 years younger than me, he had Sensory Integration Disorder. He had an Occupational Therapist, Behavioral Therapist, and Speech Pathologist. I have been exposed to these things throughout my life, which has helped shape my drive to help people and become and OT. As well as being personally affected by my brother, my best friend growing up had Asperger's Syndrome. To this day, 15 years later, we still talk regularly. Being part of her life has made me realize my love for kids as well as adults who Read more have special needs. I have worked in an assisted living home in the locked unit for those with dementia, Parkinson's, Down Syndrome, etc., for the last 2. 5 years. I love what I do and I would love to remain in this field for the rest of my life. I know what it is like to be on the outside because of my friendship with the "different" girl, as the kids at school would say. I didn't let it stop me then, and I would love to be the one who makes a child feel loved and special regardless of if they are different or not. As a child I was never invited to parties or games or anything due to my friendship with this person, and that didn't change the fact I wanted to be her best friend. I love working with those with special needs and do my best to make them feel as though they are perfect the way they are.
