My name is Danielle Hairston, I am 22 years old and a recent graduate of Valdosta State University. During my four years at Valdosta State I found my interest in volunteering to babysit children at shelters, low poverty neighborhoods, and also at boys and girls club. I was also apart of an organization that set you up with a student from Valdosta City Schools for you to meet with two times, weekly, to tutor in whatever subject they are having issues with. I also mentored two students at a middle school. When I first started mentoring I did it because I didn't have anyone there for me to push me, and encourage me to be great in school, join organizations and be active in giving back to my community. Luckily I did it on my own. From then on, I knew I wanted to be that someone to give that Read more encouragement to a child that may not have it at home. During the summer of 2012, a woman my mother knew had a baby but didn't have much support and couldn't just quit her job, so I watched her newborn son while she was at work and when I was home from school for breaks I would continue to watch him up until they moved. That was my first time ever watching a new born for five days a week, weekly. At first it was intimidating considering the fact I was about 19/20, but it became easier day by day. He mostly slept when he was new to about three months. When he started staying up longer I made sure I was on schedule with feeding him, or getting his bottle, and changing his diaper. I also watched a woman's two toddlers, 4 and and 6, last summer while she worked. I took them to and from camp, and some days watched them from home. Recently I worked at an art studio for children to attend while they are out of school. I did art projects with 3 and 4 year olds. I have also worked with a family from care.com. Monday-Friday I would pick up both girls (3 and 7) from school, bring them home, take them to extracurricular activities three days out the week, give them a snack, do homework, play if we have time, give them a bath and get them ready for dinner. I've also had the opportunity to work for another family from care with two toddlers, ages 2 and 4, for the school year and the summer. While they attended school a couple days of the week, I would pick them up from school and take them home and watch them until about 6 PM or go to activities we had planned for the day.
