For the last 2 years, I have cared for a 14-year-old and her younger sister who has down syndrome. I just recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh receiving my masters degree from the School of Education while also being a student-athlete. In the local Pittsburgh area, I had a family friend near the university, who traveled often for her job. In order to help, I offered to watch the kids for free 3 days throughout the week. T was an active 14-year-old who I took to basketball training and golf training, who I also helped with Spanish classes ( I minored in Spanish in undergrad). C was the 7-year-old daughter who has down syndrome and working with her was an actual joy as it forced me to be more patient and creative when thinking of ideas in how to have fun with her and make sure that she felt Read more as if she was no different than any other child. I also did a considerable amount of community service with my basketball team where we cared after children with terminal illnesses. The action of becoming involved with more and more community service activities and interacting with children who were battling each and everyday for their lives, simply wishing for what I took for granted, is what forged my passion. I have always enjoyed children and big families as I am one of 5, however nothing touched my heart like working with these children. It allowed me to step outside of myself and really learn about who I am as a person, forcing me to value the little things in life, opposed to placing such an emphasis on matters in which are irrelevant. I understand that caring for children is a huge responsibility and must be taken very seriously. As a result, I am fully committed to upholding these duties to the best of my abilities and ensuring that you and your child have the best experience possible.
