Hello! My name is Macy Serna and I am currently a student at the University of Iowa. I am in the Teacher Education Program where I am studying elementary education. So far in the TEP, I have been able to observe and work with a very diverse 6th grade classroom and am looking forward to many more field experiences in the near future. I have been working with children since I was a junior high student. I started babysitting when I was in middle school and have continued to do so up to today. I have volunteered at elementary and middle schools where I work with kids at after school programs, homework clubs, and athletic camps. In high school, I was accepted into the Education Academy which is a year long program offered to all students that attend a District 214 high school. The class is offered to any student Read more who has a strong desire to pursue education in their future. To be apart of the class, one has to complete a rigorous application and have an interview with the instructor of the course. Throughout the year, I got to rotate through 4 different schools which included an elementary school, middle school, ELL, and special education. During these rotations I got to learn first hand of what it takes to be a teacher. Cooperating teachers allowed me to do things like observe, teach lessons, work with small groups, create projects, and grade papers. These rotations lasted for about 12 weeks. I also volunteer for the NWSRA where I have had experience with special needs children as well as young adults. Being a future educator I know what it takes to take care of children while always having fun and suiting your families needs.
