Meet Nneka

My name is Nneka Garner! I am 21 years old, mature, responsible, reliable and fun! I'm the oldest of the 4 Garner children. With 3 siblings I have seen and done it all. Both of my parents work, and I often watched my siblings until Mom and Dad came home. I helped with homework, monitored "tech-time", and had everyone fed and ready for bed if my parents had a late night. In middle school and high school, I volunteered as a camp counselor for kids 3 and 4 years old, and kids 8-10 years old's at the Gurnee Community Park District. There we played at the park, played games, sang songs (My favorite is the Baby Shark Song!), and went swimming at the local pool. My sophomore year in college I tutored a 7th grader whose grades had started to decline. With time and discipline, together he and I were Read more able to get him back on track (He pulled his C's and D up to all B's that semester! I was really proud of him!) That semester I would come by after school, we'd have a snack and "free time' for about 30 minutes before we started his homework. After that I had him show me all of the work that his teachers had given him for the day. I would get due dates for all projects and exams, and we'd put them on the calender; then proceed with whatever homework he had. When the grades were good, he chose an incentive. I have been asked to cook. I enjoy cooking and that is always something fun to do with the kids. I also like to bake with my "buddies" (which is what I call the younger kids that I care for) as an incentive for good behavior. Who wouldn't behave for cupcakes? When baby sitting a new buddy, I like to talk with their parents to learn all about them (from allergies to how they choose discipline their child). I don't believe in "bad kids" only bad behavior. When meeting a buddy for the first time I like to talk about what I expect (rules), and what they expect from me (fun stuff!) I have found that talking with them early, makes for less tears and tantrums later! Kids don't like time outs and early bedtimes, and I don't like having to give them. I love kids, and my experience baby sitting has always been fun. Every now and then I'd have a buddy that was a little challenging, but in the end we would wind up having a great time. My goal is to provide a fun and safe environment for my buddies, and for their parents to be comfortable and confident when they leave their child/ren with me!
