I started babysitting when I was in eighth grade with two twin boys who were at the time in pre-K. I babysat for them on a semi-weekly basis up until senior year in high school, when I got a job as a receptionist at a music studio. I continued to babysit for three families periodically after I started the receptionist. This past semester I partook in an off-campus semester program in New Mexico. I tutored a classroom of second graders in an impoverished area every school day for a few hours. Many of the kids were not motivated and did not have much faith in their own futures. That being said, I never really realize just how significant the roles of a babysitter, tutor, teacher, nanny, etc. play in a child's development. I was the best motivator and role-model I knew how to be for these kids. Last year, I Read more took an intro to Teaching class at my school, and actually interned three days a week for a semester at elementary school. I loved the experience and it taught me so much about kids. I have a passion for working with them. I love goofing around and doing activities that they want to do. I have no trouble doing silly things to make them laugh or cheer up and have fun. However, there is also a point where discipline needs to be implemented, and if there is a schedule, it should be somewhat in tact. I have led Vacation Bible School for the past four summers. This volunteer job means that I lead the children, keep the activities structured and under control, and ultimately create a safe, friendly, fun environment for the kids to enjoy. One of my best friends from home has a little sister, and I love spending time with her. She is currently in junior high, but I've known her since she was in kindergarten. Every time I come home from college for break or for a weekend, she asks to meet up with me to talk about her life as a junior high student. I love serving as a mentor for this girl because it wasn't too long ago that I was in her shoes. I personally love the pressure to serve as the best role model I can possibly be because I feel confident in my character and enjoy relating to people. Despite the age difference, I form connections with kids very easily. I think that practicing good communication between the child and myself is a key component for creating a relationship with the child. I am very flexible with scheduling.
