I love spending time with children of all ages. I am a highly qualified mental health therapist with over 10 years of experience providing individual, group, and family therapy to people (birth to adult) with severe emotional, behavioral, or developmental issues.  My experience includes managing a therapeutic preschool with 36 - 48 children ages 2.5 to 5.5 while living in Southern California.  I also used to teach a 3 year old Sunday School class when I lived in Virginia. Since I have moved to Illinois, I have baby-sat children ages 4months to 3 years of all abilities. Also, I provided respite for a teen boy with special needs for over a year. I currently provide care for a 1 year old with cerebral palsy.   My background as a therapist makes me  a calming and firm influence, even in high stress situations, whether with people or animals.  As a therapist, I know how important it Read more is to follow a child's routine for mealtimes, snacks, exercise, medication, bedtime, etc.  I am highly adaptable and will base my energy levels on the needs of your child.  I enjoy surfing, running, hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding, but I realize that some children may not be very active due to health or temperament.  I have over 30 years experience taking care of children, beginning with my younger brother.  I believe in keeping children active and engaged.  Therefore, I do not talk on the phone or play on the computer while I am taking care of children. Children that I baby-sit complete their homework, read, do arts and crafts, play games, play sports, play music, and/or use their imagination.  I am fluent in Spanish, good at math, and have a Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences, so I tutor as well.  I am very health conscious and follow the parents' wishes regarding snacks and meals.  I believe in setting firm limits, but I don't get into power struggles and know when to be flexibile.  Since I do not have children of my own, I have the time and energy to be fully present for the children of others.
