Over the past five years, I have had a range of teaching experiences that have increased my teaching skills and my desire to work in a teaching environment that serves students in an urban setting. I understood that I wanted to become a teacher when I was a City Year corps member at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School, a low performing school in San Jose, California. My graduate studies at Lesley University further solidified my desire to become a teacher as I learned how to successfully engage students in a variety of subject areas. I fulfilled my student teaching requirement at the Gardner Pilot Academy, where I was able to apply the skills I had learned in Graduate school to a real classroom with students who presented unique challenges and strengths. As a special education intern at the Mission Hill K-8 School, I had the opportunity to expand my skills Read more in order to help students learn to read. I also gained experience in adapting curriculum for students who were struggling academically and behaviorally. As an Assistant Teacher at Manville School, I worked with a highly experienced teacher who helped me solidify my skills while teaching students with social/emotional and behavioral issues in a therapeutic setting. In that position, I co-taught all subjects, as well as adapted curriculum and developed and implemented behavioral plans for students. Currently, I am a Fellow at the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School where I teach math and reading in a 5th and a 6th grade classroom, as well as assist the lead teachers throughout the school day. In this position, I have had the opportunity to combine my teaching and behavioral management skills, and through this approach, I have seen students grow and flourish as they often have exceeded expectations in both academic and behavioral areas.
