I have loved working with kids for as long as I can remember. Playing with neighborhood children turned into babysitting, being a residential counselor at Chimney Corners Camp for Girls and working for the Smith College Campus School. In addition, I also had the pleasure of leading Hale Day Camp's Outdoor Adventures program, where I had a blast exploring the wilderness and building connections with middle schoolers while leading our multi-day camping trips. While still in college, I spent two summers teaching 8th grade literature for Breakthrough Cambridge, where I learned to manage unruly classrooms, explored ways to make my lessons fun and engaging, and spent countless hours learning just how many different sports they could beat me in. I graduated Smith College last spring and now work as an Adventure Educator for Hale Reservation. Every day I get to meet a new group of students from all around the Read more state, usually 5th through 9th graders, and spend the day exploring nature, developing team building and communication skills with them, and creating an environment where they feel supported and comfortable challenging themselves on the high ropes elements. Although I love meeting so many different people, I miss the connections I'm able to build with individual children through ongoing relationships that is lost when I have a different group every day. This is why, during Hale's off-season, I am excited about the possibility of getting to know a family more personally. At Hale, I typically work with children in 5th through 9th grade. At the Campus School, I worked primarily with students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade. I have scattered experience working with children younger than 5 and older than 16, and I am excited to spend time with kids of any age. Philosophy: Last summer, several campers told me that my program "didn't feel like camp." I asked what they meant: "You don't tell us what to do like in school. You don't get upset when we make mistakes. This program is all about making us feel good. I like the way I feel here." They were responding to my core philosophy: respect. Whether having fun or disciplining a child, my actions come from a place of respect. I tell new groups when they come to Hale: “You are always teaching me. When you listen respectfully to my directions, you are teaching me that you can handle more responsibility, and we can play cool games. If you do not, I won’t yell. I'll just learn that you’re not ready to play."
