Hello, my name is Nicole. Thank you for taking the time to view my profile today. Seven years ago I graduated college with my Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies and Women's Studies. I have since worked in film and television production as well as in retail management. I grew up with a younger sister and brother starting my babysitting days early on. In middle school I had my first job as the neighborhood babysitter. Every summer since then through college I worked at the local recreation camp as a counselor and arts and crafts director. Since working professionally I have had worked less with other families and made more time for my own. I am lucky enough to have all four of my grandparents alive and have 8 younger cousins. My maternal grandmother of 87 has advanced Alzheimer's as well as limited mobility. She and my 96 year old grandfather Read more live mostly independently, with lots of helpers chipping in. I enjoy spending time with them as often as possible, working with my grandmother to help her get up and down stairs, get dressed and bathed as well as fed and properly medicated. Similarly to a babysitter to young children, a caregiver to elderly must not only complete logistical tasks but also keep up morale and encourage interaction. The most rewarding thing about caring for my grandparents is seeing them smile or even sing and dance when we're together because we have so much fun! Caring for another person, regardless of age, tends to result in a deeply intimate relationship. I believe attitude is everything and its important to remember that a positive outlook is as infectious as a negative one. I am a very positive person; however, I do not hesitate to discipline when necessary. I feel it is important for children to understand when and why behaviors are inappropriate as well as be encouraged for positive behaviors. Although discipline is necessary at times, I feel it is not productive to dwell on negative actions. Focusing on the positive and talking about what right looks like, allows the child to move on and make better choices going forward without feeling bad about themselves. I have been a women's self defense instructor for over 10 years. I feel the most important and powerful thing you can provide is the feeling of empowerment. Women need to feel empowerment through realization of personal strength, likewise children need to feel empowerment through decision making and realization of consequences good or bad.
