I began providing after-school care after being laid off as a computer programmer. I looked after Mark, age 8, for over a year until his father lost his job. I would pick him up from school and give him lunch on early release days. I helped him with his homework and developed a reading program for him over the summer to get him ready for second grade. We did a lot of outdoor activities like bike riding and hiking on conservation land. I took him to museums and supervised play dates. During vacations and snow days I look after his older sister too.  We had a lot of fun and I came to feel a bit like a foster grandmother to him. Shortly after working for Mark's family I began doing after-school care for Mitchell (13) and Alicia (10). Mostly I picked them up from school and drove them to Read more after-school activities but occasionally organized baking activities and outings. Mitch and Alicia were allowed to play computer games after they finished with their homework so I didn't get a chance to engage them in other activities. This was a time limited job which ended when their mother graduate from professional school. The bulk of my child care experience has been raising my own 2 children and a step-daughter. I care for my 6 year old grand-daughter occasionally and 8 month old grandson more regularly. We have taken the older one on vacations without her parents since she was 2. I can play on the floor, climb playground equipment, hike, bike, hunt for bugs, build block structures, engage in make believe and fit a child in my lap. I am also happy to walk a dog or pat a cat.
