Formally, I have a great deal of experience with children. I have worked on the neurobehavioral unit at Kennedy Krieger, which consisted of caring for children (ages 3-21, primarily) who have been diagnosed with relatively extreme behavioral disorders. I have also worked on a pediatric psychiatric unit at Johns Hopkins (ages 5-17, primarily), which consisted of caring for children who require observation and treatment for situations ranging from self-injurious tendencies, substance abuse, etc. I have also been a camp counselor in the past, so I am familiar with caring for multiple children simultaneously. Initially, I hoped to attend medical school (I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with the pre-med prerequisites and a B.S. in psychology), but due to certain experiences in formal healthcare settings, I no longer currently feel a desire to pursue those goals which once appealed to me. To be blunt, and I don’t know why this is, but I connect with children very well (perhaps that is why I so enjoy being around them), and so I’ve come to love spending time with children; it is something that I find to be profoundly fulfilling. Lastly, I am a large male. To quantify things: I am approximately 6’1, 220+ pounds, and relatively muscular. I can only assume that I do not look like the sort of person who you would assume to be interested in caring for children. I include this information because I am aware of its potential relevance, whether the conclusions reached are positive or negative.
