I have been working with kids in variety of ways since age twelve. In seventh grade my mother signed me up for a Safe Sitter certification class, and from there I did babysitting jobs through middle school and high school. My time in the Boy Scouts of America provided me with multiple leadership experiences. The staff recognized that I had exceptional patience and talent for working with young scouts. The Scoutmasters selected me to lead the introductory first year scout classes at summer camp, a leadership position usually reserved for scouts in their fourth or fifth year, when I was in my third year. Throughout the remainder of my scouting career I organized many functions and planned multiple service projects where I organized Scouts who varied in age from twelve to seventeen together for common goals. In my final year as Eagle Scout I was voted Top Scout, an annual Read more award bestowed by peer vote. I continued to demonstrate leadership and work with kids during college. During my junior year I worked with student leadership from the Naval Academy to create a tutoring program to serve elementary and middle school students from the neighboring Bloomsbury Square community. The program still operates and has provided over 800 hours of service. In my senior year I served as a Resident Assistant of a freshman hall. Currently I am serving as a Corps Member with City Year DC. City Year is an Americorps sponsored program designed to combat the national high school dropout crisis by placing young adults as tutors in low performing elementary and middle schools. I am currently serving in a school with elementary aged students. I really enjoy working with kids of all ages. I recognize that much of my success has been due to the impact of mentors, and feel obligated to provide guidance to the next generation. My personality is naturally fun and goofy, so I have fun with kids as well.
