I am my best self around kids. They remind me to be free with my imagination, to be curious, and to refrain from judgement. My caregiving history began when I was 12, as a "mother's helper" for a family with two daughters and a mentally and physically-disabled son. At the time, I was mostly a playmate for the older kids, but as I grew, the family entrusted me with more responsibilities to watch their three children on my own. The best complement I ever received came from their oldest, who became worried that her mother wouldn't come home one day and said, "I know it will be okay because you're here Molly, and you're magic." Since then I've nannied full-time for two summers -- the highlights of which were creating a huge mural of our summer experiences, taking the kids away from the screen to create forts in the woods Read more or pretend to be dolphins at the pool, and helping the youngest to catch up with her math skills through daily practice. When it comes to children's learning and self-confidence, I am a huge proponent of the growth mindset. My other experiences include babysitting on and off for various families in St. Paul, MN working at EXPO Elementary as a classroom assistant, tutoring in schools, and working with children and teens in various outdoor summer programs. About me: I graduated from Macalester College in 2016 with an English (Creative Writing) degree. Since graduating, I have worked at a youth development organization called Youth Farm, as well as an educational non-profit called Midwest Food Connection. I moved back home to Athens, OH in August 2019 and am currently serving as an AmeriCorps with Rural Action. My career interests include sustainable agriculture, environmental advocacy, elementary education, outdoor environmental education, childhood counseling/therapy, and writing/editing/publishing. However, I spend most hours of my week playing music -- playing guitar or mandolin and singing. Growing up with a dance professor and jazz musician taught me creativity, flexibility, and artistic confidence. I believe in the importance of the arts and outdoors when working with children.
