I have had the opportunity to care for children in a number of settings. I became comfortable working with children through volunteering in Sunday School at church. When I graduated from high school I began nannying and babysitting that summer. I babysat mostly for elementary-age boys. In college, I have worked with children mostly in a medical care setting. I want to be a pediatric neurologist in the future, so I have spent a lot of time shadowing pediatricians and learning from the doctors and the families. I also worked one summer as a Health Services Officer at a Summer Camp. I was trained in Emergency Medicine, and I supplied medicine and first aid to any camper/staff that was ill or injured. I learned a lot about first aid, handling difficult situations, and communicating with children. I have also done a bit of tutoring at a local middle school. I Read more love the unique challenge of working with children. In my classes, I learn all about the different stages of development and how that is affected by different situations and special needs. However, actually spending time with children is a completely different experience. Each child brings their own perspective and needs. You also have to build a good relationship with the parents. Ultimately, I know that all of the experience I am gaining now will make me a better doctor farther down the road.
