Started baby sitting at 8 years old! I'm 4 6now. I stayed home with my two children who are now 21 and 18. I think we did pretty good raising them. My 21 year is out of the home and on his own. My 18 year old is currently away at Americorps, but will be back home soon. to complete junior college and likely away again to finish at a four year away from home. I believe in both self play, exploration and interactive play. If my TV is on - it's solely for the purpose of me being able to prep meals or do dishes/chores or if the kiddos are in need of 'down time.' The only things we watch are for sign language or a learning video if a kiddo wants to investigate something. I'm not an expert on the solar system - so I'll generally say - Read more "let's look it up!" If the weather is nice - we'll go outside for about 20-30 minutes at a time. I have a flower garden and often grow tomatoes, herbs and a few other things. I try to involve the kids in 'doing' things as well. I'm huge on learning by experience. I believe that trying something and failing and trying again. I also believe in NOT arguing with a kiddo. If I say wash your hands...and a kiddo says why....my reply is often "Yes, Miss Lisa". Integrity and self awareness are often part of my discipline. If you hit someone, yes you'll be asked to step aside and think for a minute. This also gives me a moment to evaluate the situation. The child is often a part of their solution. I focus on 'why' we hit...'what' were we going to accomplish by doing that? How do we fix it? Can we fix it? I'm a big fan of helping kids understand their own behavior so they can be responsible for the things they say and do! (Go Girl Scout Law!). I'm a creative person so I'm often 'all over the place' in what we're doing. If a child says they're bored at my house - it's because they chose not to participate. We cook, we build, we play, we dig, we do art (with real art history), we read and we do quiet time.
