Hello! My name is Maggie Horne. I am 22 years old and I am from Gastonia, NC. I recently moved to Durham, NC to begin my teaching career. I am a recent graduate of Appalachian State University, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education. I am a triplet, and have had many experiences with boisterous families (like my own). I began babysitting when I was 13 years old. I have babysat for many families, with children ranging from 1 month old to 12 years old. While I was in high school, I worked for Kumon Learning Center, providing academic support and challenge to students ages 3 to 16. I also worked for a summer camp for people with special needs, called Camp Joy. Here I worked with people ranging in age from 14 to 87. Yes, 87. One of our campers celebrated his 87th birthday while at camp Read more with us, it was wonderful. Our campers had moderate to severe and profound diagnoses. While at Appalachian I was a member of the Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program, which gave young adults with disabilities the opportunity to attend Appalachian with the support that they needed, academically and socially. I was also a part of an International Alternative Service Experience to Granada, Nicaragua. Here we were able to work with local people to learn how to empower the surrounding villages to break the cycle of poverty through education. We were involved with a community organization and were able to teach lessons and do physical labor in a local school. This began my journey of becoming a global citizen and wanting to learn more to educate my future students. Last semester, I was able to finish my Student Teaching in Bray, Ireland where I continued that education. In Ireland I worked in 31 "Senior Infants", which are all kindergarten age. No matter how many children you have, just know I can handle it after that experience.
