I have been a mother since 1981, 1985, 1988 and 1990. I am the mother of four -- now young adult -- grown children. While my children were young, I was a stay-at-home mom that also babysat for two other preschool children. Two of my four children are graduated from college, and one of them is a medical doctor. I now also have 3 grandchildren ages 7, 2 , and 1. I always wanted to be a teacher but since I was not afforded that opportunity, I put my energy into my children, including being a Superstar Math Volunteer at Pine Valley School. I am currently a babysitter at my local church -- Myrtle Grove Baptist Church and have previously been a Sunday School Teacher. I love children and understand that their play is their "work" and that their toys and their "tools." As much as possible, I would allow Read more my kids to be in group sports so that they would learn to be a team player. I also as a 6 year old child taught my 3 year old sister to read; by the time she was 4 years old she had her own library card (she would later go own to get her Master's Degree). I love watching kids learn especially when the "light bulb" seems to come on and you know that they "got it!" In general, I enjoy how fast young children can learn; it never ceases to amaze me. I also understand that different children learn in different styles; for example, my son was an audio learner. You could read a story to him and he could repeat almost everything because he was an audio learner. My daughter had a photographic memory just as though her brain would take a picture of a written page that she would remember. Anyway when you discover how a child learns, it can make a huge difference as to average vs. outstanding results. But the most important thing that I learned in the process of being a mother/caregiver is that children need love and security -- they thrive in an environment when those elements are in place. A very wise person told me a long time ago that l-o-v-e is spelled t-i-m-e, and I immediately embraced that thought pattern and now that my children are grown, they were worth every minute.
