Hi, my name is Ashten Hernandez and I am a 21-year-old student at Hastings College. I am majoring in Psychology and Spanish and I will graduate in May 2017. I just spent four months in Cusco, Peru learning, experiencing, and volunteering. I volunteered at two different projects. My first project I volunteered at is called Aldea Yanapay and it is an after school program for kids who come from poverty and/or a bad home. This project is run by a few workers and the rest are volunteers. At this project, I helped the kids with homework, played with them, listened to them, and loved them. My second project is called Misioneras de La Caridad de Madre Teresa de Calcuta. This is a home for mentally and physically disabled adults and children. The problems with the adults and children ranged from cerebral palsy to autism. It is run by a few Read more workers, nuns, and volunteers. I worked in the children's unit and I did whatever chores that needed to be done. The chores ranged from changing bedding, sweeping, mopping, laundry, etc. I also spent time with the children. I helped get them dressed, did their hair, helped walk with the children who could walk, fed them, brushed their teeth, put them to bed, etc. I also helped the physical therapist in the therapy room. There, I helped the therapist stretch the kids and whatever else she needed done. These two experiences definitely heightened my interest and passion in childcare. I also have past experience with babysitting and people with disabilities. I grew up watching my sister who is 10 years younger than me and I have an aunt who is physically and mentally disabled. My plans for the future are to get my CNA, travel and volunteer more, and get my Master's in ABA Psychology.
