This September I am moving to lovely España in hopes that I can pursue a career in Early Childcare Development and English as a Second Language. My experience as a babysitter is limited to familial affairs, but I have had numerous occasions to interact with children and care for them through my Sorority Community service. As active Activities Director of my sorority, I oversaw the creation and funding of our annual Princess for a Day event and Superhero for a Day event. Both days involve providing youth under the age of 12 with a stable outlet to express their gender through empowerment and encouragement by the young women of my organization. I don't consider myself bilingual, but I grew up in a multicultural home. When you dad is a French professor and speaks eight languages, and your mother dabbles in three, it forces you to take an interest in the Read more diverse world around you. Currently I am in my seventh year of study in Japanese, my sixth month of Spanish and I have known English and Yoruba all of my life. I believe worldliness is what leads to cohesiveness in society. If I can understand one's culture or background I can relate to them in ways that go beyond my own Nigerian or American heritage. The type of education and family I grew up with is one I hope to impart on all children left in my care. In this ever-growing and ever-changing world I think it's important to project an open mind to youths as they are, quite literally, the future. I can offer not only my abilities as a cook and cleaner, but perhaps better in the areas of homework and studying for tests. Every person has a different learning style and it's important to patiently assist someone through a learning disability or disorder that may arise due to the daily stress of school work. The goal of school should be to help a student learn and my actions should mimic that when needed. Lastly, through my brief time with your family I hope to garner an appreciation for childcare and "babysitting" that I can translate into useful skills for my internship this coming September. Thank you so much for your time. Tomi Ogundayo Phillips Exeter Academy '11 University of Pittsburgh '15
