Hello! Although I'm only 18, I have a great deal of experience working with both children and adults with special needs. I was home schooled for much of my education so I had a front row seat (and often helped out) for over a decade while my mom and dad served as foster parents for medically fragile children and babies. We eventually adopted a little guy who was born badly drug addicted and alcohol exposed. He is nearly nine now and we couldn't love him more but he is a handful and requires a small army of people who provide support services. Because of him and many of the kids who came through our home who needed so much, I applied for a job as a care technician at a residential camp for teens and adults run by ARC of Gloucester County. I lived there with the residents this past Read more summer and not only did I learn a lot, but I had a great time! I had direct care of different clients each week from sun up to sun down. They had a variety of special needs -- autism, CP, Down's, etc but every day we swam, did sports, played games, sang, had arts and crafts, and some enjoyable meals. My supervisors have offered to recommend me for any position I apply for in the field. Right now I am not interested in taking college classes until I am sure of which career direction I want to pursue. I am looking for a full or part time position to begin as soon as possible and I am willing to commit to at least a year because I understand how important continuity of care is to both adults and children with special needs. (My little brother has a really hard time transitioning to new service providers and it shows up as some very negative behavior.) I am mature, patient, reliable, and extremely responsible. I have had my own lawn care/pet sitting business since junior high and several of my customers have offered to recommend me as well. I enjoy caring for adults and children with special needs because I understand how much they and their families rely on the job that I do. At the end of the day I take pride in my work and like to know that my efforts mattered.
