I'm the mom of a 21 year old college-age daughter and an active, special needs 10 year old son. I hold a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work, and during my professional career, I specialized in working with children from infancy to late adolescence. My son joined our family through adoption and came to us through the NJ Foster Care system, where we were a licensed foster family for 5 years. Prior to my son's arrival, I was a Girl Scout Leader for more than 9 years and an active school and community volunteer. I am currently the Den Leader for a great group of high functioning Aspergers and ADHD boys through my son's Cub Scout program. My parenting experience and my Cub Scouting involvement has given me a renewed dedication to working with special needs children on a part-time basis during the day when my son is at school Read more (Monday to Friday from 8 am to 3 pm). I am familiar with sensory integration issues (especially those related environmental stressors like loud sounds and bright light as well as dietary challenges due to taste and texture). I believe in facilitating behavioral change through the use of positive supports. I have worked successfully with simple behavior modification techniques (Kazdin method). I also have a particular interest in communication and social skills development in ASD and ADHD children. I find kids to be fascinating, and think that my easy rapport with most of them is because of my genuine interest in learning about what they're thinking and feeling. There's nothing much that throws me, probably as a consequence of my long "work" history as a stay-at-home mom. I also see the humor in situations that might frustrate others. I'm equally creative and patient, love to play and like to keep on the move.
