I am a Sophomore student at Washington University. I am studying psychology and Spanish. I have had hands-on experience with younger children. For instance, last summer I worked at Crestwood Day Camp as a summer camp counselor with twenty 5-year-old boys. I was one of three counselors and a group leader. I was responsible for the supervision of my campers at all times, in addition to ensuring that they were all having fun and playing safely and respectfully with each other. I think that I played an important role in preserving friendships and facilitating new ones. When it came my to campers, though this applies to all kids I work with, I considered their safety my NUMBER ONE priority. I enjoy playing games of all kinds with kids, but I'm always watching out for their safety. This value certainly came in handy during my summer working at Crestwood, as there Read more were unfortunately a few instances where my safety instincts kicked in and I was forced into action (e.g. taking camper to nurse for allergic reactions or minor cuts/bruises). I really enjoyed working as a camp counselor. I valued my role as a model for my campers in what is right/wrong and as a person who shaped these campers and fostered their growth and development. My experience, however, is not limited to large groups. I have also worked closely with two children as their babysitter. I first babysat them when the girl was three and the boy was five. Now, the girl has graduated pre-k (I'm so excited for her) and is five, while the boy is seven. I have truly appreciated working with these kids. They are so much fun to be around and such a pleasure to look after. I hope to have similar experiences with other children.
