When I was a 17 year old Senior at Plainview JFK High School, our Health class required each student to complete 10 hours of community service in order to receive a passing grade in the class. An Alumnos of the school came by our class one morning to inform us about an after school program held at Stratford Rd Elementary for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. That previous summer, I had watched a Lifetime special about a set of twin boys, and one of them had Autism. This movie is what sparked my interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders, I was fascinated by how complex of a developmental disorder it is and how individuals on the Spectrum can excel so far in one area but fall far behind in others. So once this Alumnos came to our class, I knew what I wanted to do for my community service. I had Read more attended Stratford Elementary myself as a child, and the school was within walking distance of my house (I wasn't driving at the time) and I was able to take off time on Thursdays from my regular job at McDonald's to spend a few hours volunteering at the afterschool program, which was known as TAG (The Afterschool Group) and was run by the Institute for Children with Autism. I showed up for 2 hours every Thursday for 5 weeks and had managed to developed connections with some of the students in the group. By the end of my 10 hours of volunteer work, I asked the supervisor if it would be alright if I stayed on board for the remainder of the school year and they were delighted to have me. At the end of the school year, I was presented with an award by ICA for outstanding achievement in community service with their program. They helped me acquire a paying position as a day camp counselor at the Special Education Day Camp provided by the Plainview Old Bethpage School District that following summer (2007) and proceeded to officially hire me and put me on the payroll that following school year for TAG. I spent the following 2-3 years working for them several days throughout the week and enjoyed every minute of it, acquiring skills in behavior intervention using Applied Behavior Analysis techniques.. I worked with students from as young as 5 to as old as 16, on all ends of the Spectrum. Since then, I have worked with Adults with Autism for Eden II Services (The Genesis Program) and now provide my own private Respite services for individuals on the Spectrum (Including PDD/NOS) as well as specialized piano lessons based off the ABA Method. Please contact for résumé
