I enjoy being a caretaker because I love meeting new people. As a child, I had some really awesome and interesting caretakers who shared some great experiences with me, so I know how much it means for a child to have a positive experience with a caretaker, in the absence of a parent. In my most recent position as a YMCA summer camp counselor, I planned and organized activities to reflect the interests of a varied group of kids, but that also would engage them in doing something new and different. I always felt good at the end of the day, when one or more of them were excited to tell their parents about our activities or adventures. I also loved to hear their ideas and working to come up with things that they would enjoy doing to pass the time. I also believe that every child is unique and Read more every child deserves to have a great experience, so it is really important for me (as a caretaker) to make that connection as a person, finding out what they really like to do -whether it be reading a book, playing chess or kicking a soccer ball around the yard. I have also been fortunate enough to experience a lot of different activities including scouting, volunteer work, athletics and community service, where taking care of others was a priority. I have always enjoyed the energy that comes from these interactions. Keeping kids busy and engaged seems to come easily to me. My experiences in caring for others have also lead me to pursue a potential career in health, wellness and/or education. As a wellness educator and career peer at my university, I have been able to help other students achieve their goals, deal with important issues and plan events for people to enjoy. I have learned so much about the world from listening and engaging in these new experiences. As a caretaker, I am very flexible, patient, open minded and make safety my top priority.
