To begin, I am a School Psychology grad student that has experience working with children in many different capacities. As a child and adolescent, I mainly babysat or tutored those closest to me--siblings, younger family members, or children of neighbors. But as I reached working age, I gained several different experiences. After earning a B.A. in Psychology, I searched for an opportunity to use my degree as well as work with children. I soon became a mental health technician at an inpatient facility, where I worked for two years with children and adolescents of many ages and ethnicities. I not only worked on improving daily life skills such as tooth brushing, bathing/showering, room cleaning, exercise, and healthy eating habits, but I also helped children with psychological well-being. Encountering behaviors ranging from defiance and aggression to self-injury and suicidality, I conducted trainings on coping skills, anger management, social skills, and many Read more other skills that the children could implement inside and outside of the facility. During and after my two years as an MHT, I also worked at a school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders for four years. During this time, I became a Registered Behavior Technician and CPR certified. As an RBT, I learned to use Applied Behavior Analysis to work with children on skills such as potty training, hand washing, tooth brushing, independent clothing, self-cleaning, independent eating, increasing language and/or socialization, reducing maladaptive behaviors such as aggression, self injury, and noncompliance, reducing repetitive behaviors, and improving academics. Along with those two very rewarding job opportunities, I have also worked with a typically developing two year old boy in a home setting. While we did work on increasing independence in the form of potty training, hand washing, tooth brushing, independently cleaning up toys and dishes, and working on language acquisition and some academics, down time was spent having fun making arts and crafts and watching his favorite movies. In summary, I am not only valuable as a babysitter, but also as a person that will help a child learn and grow.
