Meet Akela

My name is Akela (uh-kay-luh), I'm 27 and grew up in Portland. I am, first and foremost, an artist. While i work in many mediums, I have been dancing professionally for the last few years, and studying dance since i was 13. I am a back up dancer for local music acts; Chanti Darling and The Last Artful, Dodgr, and my weekends are usually spent on stage. I've been providing child care for friends and family since high school. I started with a beautiful family in North Portland and have watched their son Calvin grow from sippy cups to Instagram. During the 5 years that I cared for Calvin I traveled with the family, was an overnight nanny, a house cleaner, a dog walker, homework helper and an occasional cheerleader at his indoor soccer games. I left their family to go to school in DC, to study fine arts and Read more dance. I also taught youth movement classes at a studio in Virginia, teaching 25 kids in glitter leotards how to do summersaults. Since being back in Portland I have been working on building roots for myself and my community. I am part of a collective of dancers and performing artists that doubles as my family. Nannying has been the most rewarding way to supplement my personal goals of creating great art that heals others. Art has been my route to discovering myself and I would like to pass on that knowledge in every way I can. Presently i work (very) part time with four different families. I am looking to maintain a nanny schedule of no more than 4 days a week, so that I can be available for shows. I believe in supporting children in following their own passions, by showing them constant love and respect, and guiding them away from self doubt. I love to work with my hands and sing. I love to cook, even though I am, admittedly, still learning. Working with children teaches me precious knowledge that will one day help me raise a family. While I am currently spending time with only toddlers, I have experience with newborns, teenagers and every age in between. Thank you for taking the time to read my bio, have a wonderful day!
